Spring Update – Echium and Hibiscus

Spring has been a very active period in the garden. The meadow has sprung back to life with Purple Three-awn filling in much of the open areas from the previous year. Despite two previous years of toadflax and poppies decorating most of the meadow they were pretty much absent from the garden this spring – Still not sure why.

After three years the Blue Hibiscus has bloomed

This has been in for three years without any blooms but this year we finally had quite a display.

We’ve had multiple flowers for the past 3 weeks

There’s a lot fo construction happening in the neighborhood and I believe some nests may have been disturbed. We found this Bull Snake trying to get through the screen door to play with the cats.

He moved away under the patio planter shortly after

Although not venomous I was certainly apprehensive about approaching him although I do welcoem some natural mice control.

Purple Three-awn has really expanded naturally

Another side project has been cleaning out the lane of left over rock form the front garden.

Another new display was from the second Pride of Madeira. I’ve done a lot of reading about these and had to resist the urge to water when wilted. This one managed to pull through and will have a nice about of filtered shade above it from the mesquite tree in summer.

Another new bloomer is the Echium Candicans.
